Reasons usually include:
1. It provides something of benefit to himself. This was what motivated him during the whole "let's blow up parts of the Thor!" plot.
2. He's doing it specifically to spite someone.

3. Sometimes he just does it because he can! Usually nothing terribly, you know, big and destructive though, if just for this reason.
4. He's feeling particularly
crazy
depressed, moody, unstable, whatever, and he decides to take it out on the stupid little mortals surrounding him?
IDK IF THAT HELPS??
